MACRAME BY SEB

I am Sebastien, a 43 year old French guy who has live in Scotland for 20 years. I moved here to study at University and despite the awful weather, I’m still here! I now manage a popular French restaurant in the city centre of Edinburgh.

In my free time I love to do macramé which is the art of knotting strings into decorative items such as wall hangings or pot holders. I started Macramé as I discovered a passion for interior design during a trip to Palm Springs in California. I was heavily influenced by the stunning mid century architecture and the antique shops in the Design District. Macramé was everywhere and it inspired me to give it a try on my return to Scotland.

I purchased some cotton online and started to follow Youtube tutorials, it was tricky at first, but once I mastered the basic knots, I was soon able to experiment and get creative. I honestly can say that it has changed my life, I am not sure what I was doing of my free time before! It has become an obsession, and it is a great way to express my creativity.

Macrame is the perfect way to add texture and warmth to any room. It has become very commercial recently and you don’t want to make it yourself you can find it in lots of retailers . Like anything else, it has evolved since it first became popular in the 1950’s-70’s. The use of funky colors and designs make has made it very current and the perfect addition to any contemporary interior.

I started an instagram page and the positive feedback from followers was very encouraging. I soon had  people asking me if I could make one for them and so on. Now I am selling my work in shops throughout Scotland and through my instagram page. Along the way, through fairs and Instagram I have met and collaborated some very interesting and passionate people like Matic Benet.I am very much looking forward to seeing what the future brings and how my work will involve. I have also started making concrete pots which compliments my macrame work but you need to stay tuned for that, it is still in the early stages. You can see my portfolio of work here; @by__seb
